What the Hand Remembers
The neuroscience of putting pen to paper
There’s a club in Verona whose volunteers answer letters addressed to Juliet.
Not to a foundation or a literary trust. To the character herself - Romeo and Juliet’s Juliet. Tens of thousands of letters arrive every year, in dozens of languages, from people who know a stranger will read them. They write by hand. They always have, since the club began in 1972.
It would be easy to explain this away as sentiment. But there’s something else going on. These people chose the slower, more exposed medium for the things they most needed to say.
The Permanence Problem
Handwriting can’t be undone.
When you type and delete, the deletion is invisible. The hesitation leaves no trace. But cross out a word on paper and the crossing-out stays there - a small record of your thinking, not just the thought you eventually arrived at.
This is what the Juliet letters have: not polish; commitment. You commit before you’re sure, and the commitment shows. The letter you send carries the weight of everything you nearly said.
My own notebooks work this way. An early draft of an idea, crossed out and restarted on the same page, is more honest than a screen that shows only the cleanest version. The mess is information. It tells me where the thinking was uncertain.
What the Brain Is Actually Doing
This isn’t only a matter of feeling; there’s a neurological explanation for all of this.
Audrey van der Meer, professor of neuropsychology at NTNU, found that students who take notes by typing are, in her phrase, “typing without thinking” - they hear words and relay them without engaging. Speed becomes the priority; the content becomes secondary.
When researchers wired up students to measure brain activity as they wrote, the difference was striking. Handwriting lit up motor, visual, and language systems simultaneously. Typing produced far less activity across all three.
Writing by hand is slower than typing. The brain gets time to actually process what the words mean rather than just pass them along. You can’t outrun the idea. Every sentence has to be decided before it can be committed to the page.
This is distinct from what I covered in Why Your Brain Loves Physical Books, which was about reading print versus screens. The research here is specifically about the act of writing - what the motor pathways involved in forming letters do to memory and attention. A different system, with the same conclusion: the physical act is doing cognitive work that the digital shortcut doesn’t.
Slowness as the Actual Feature
Writing by hand forces you to decide what’s worth saying, because saying it costs more effort. You can’t loop back and quietly revise. You have to choose.
That’s why people write letters to Juliet by hand rather than sending emails to a webform. It isn’t that handwriting is more beautiful, or more traditional. It’s that the slowness is exactly what makes the letter feel like it means something - to the writer as much as to the reader. The effort is part of the communication.

What I’m interested in here is more specific: what handwriting does that typing can’t, in terms of what the brain retains and what the hand commits to. The analog argument is philosophical. This is physiological.
An Invitation, Not a Project
I’m not suggesting you start a journalling practice or write more by hand as a productivity system.
But notice what you reach for a pen to say. Notice what you’re happy to type.
There’s probably a difference. The things you write by hand - cards, notes to yourself in margins, the list you make when you’re trying to think something through cleanly - are usually the things that require you to commit, to decide, to mean it.
That distinction is worth paying attention to. It is a signal about what the thinking needs.
